Transfusion Medicine Fellowship

Transfusion Medicine:

The UCLA Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers an ACGME-approved one-year training program in Transfusion Medicine. A candidate must be a California licensed physician and board eligible/certified in Pathology (CP or AP/CP) or another major specialty board. Transfusion Medicine trainees develop expertise in Transfusion Medicine practice, transfusion service and donor center operations and laboratory management. In addition, they participate in Transfusion Medicine-based research and develop expertise in evaluating and implementing new techniques and laboratory procedures.

To meet our training objectives, the fellow spends the majority of his or her time in the UCLA Division of Transfusion Medicine. This includes integrated rotations in the Transfusion Service, the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center and the Therapeutic Hemapheresis Unit. Elective rotations are designed to meet the needs and interests of individual fellows but generally include the American Red Cross Reference Laboratory, the UCLA Immunogenetics (HLA) Center and UCLA’s hematopoietic stem cell unit. The UCLA blood bank transfuses approximately 80,000 blood products per year and provides specialized clinical consultation services in support of the many complex medical and surgical services at the UCLA Medical Center. Experience in blood center administration will be gained at the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center, which collects approximately 35,000 donations per year. Clinical interaction, management decisions and teaching occur throughout the training period. The primary participating faculty members are Drs. Qun Lu, Shan Yuan and Alyssa Ziman. Fellows are now supported by the Henry Brandler Endowment Fund. Mr. Brandler was a long-time and much-loved volunteer in the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center.

Applications are accepted at any time but are actively reviewed approximately 1 year before the anticipated start date, typically July 1st. Completion of a standard UCLA housestaff application and provision of 3 letters of reference are required. Inquiries should be addressed to:
