Cytopathology Fellowships

The cytopathology fellowship is a one year program designed to provide an in-depth experience in exfoliative cytology and fine needle aspiration.  Two fellowship positions are available.  The training in this ACGME - accredited program qualifies the trainee for certification for the cytology specialty examination offered by the American Board of Pathology.  Minimum requirements: 4 years AP/CP residency or 3 years straight Anatomic Pathology residency.  Typically, the fellow attends sign-out of exfoliative and fine needle aspirates and attains sign-out proficiency.  The trainee performs fine needle aspirations.  Fellows also assist radiological aspiration of deep lesions performed with radiographic guidance.  Presentation experience is provided through periodic responsibilities for various clinical teaching conferences, tumor board conferences, the cytology journal club, and the School of Cytotechnology.  A research topic is typically selected, often in collaboration with other laboratories, such as molecular pathology and immunohistochemistry.  There are also opportunities for elective rotations.  Papers for publication and/or presentation at national meetings are frequently the result of research efforts.
